Step one: Check your wiring and router setup
After performing each of the below steps, run a speed test as well as a data transfer test (download a large file, and note the peak transfer rate, as a general rule your speed is 1mb per 100k of the transfer rate), and note the result, as this will help identify any issues caused by the setup.
1) Remove any filters or splitters that may be attached to the router.
2) Move your router to the main drop point in your home (the point at which the telephone line enters the house).
3) Unplug anything else that uses a phone socket, including phones that may be plugged into the router, TV receivers etc.
4) Plug the computer into the router via Ethernet.
5) Perform the latest firmware update for your router, an update for the Vodafone supplied home gateway can be found here.
6) Unplug your router from the power socket for a minimum of 10 minutes , then plug it back in.
7) Leave the equipment set up in this manner for at least 24 hours and note the results.
8) Return each piece of equipment to its previous position in your home, testing between each if possible, again noting any difference in performance.
Step two: Manually assign DNS addresses to optimise connection speed
Change your DNS addresses using the steps below (Important: please only use the correct set of DNS addresses, using the incorrect set may result in a significant speed decrease).
- Click Start.
- Open Control Panel.
- If it says "Pick a category" at the top, click "Switch to Classic view" in the top left of the window.
- Click Network Connections (on Vista machines, this option is found under "network and sharing centre", then "manage network connections" on the left hand side).
- Find the Local Area Connection icon.
- Right-click on the icon and select Properties.
- On the general tab, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) (if there is an IPV4 and IPV6 option, highlight IPV4).
- Click properties on the right hand side of the box.
- In the new window, make sure "obtain an IP address automatically" is selected.
- In the bottom half of this window, click the "use the following DNS server addresses" option.
- Please enter the following DNS addresses into the boxes:
- Preferred DNS Server: 184.108.40.206
- Alternate DNS Server: 220.127.116.11
- Click OK.
Step three: Use safe mode to determine whether internet capable programs are impacting your speed
To start in safe mode, which will prevent many of the programs that launch automatic connections from starting up, follow the steps below:
- Shut down your computer entirely.
- Find the F8 key on your keyboard (or whichever key your manufacturer has set to enter safe mode) and tap it repeatedly
- Switch the PC on while continuing to tap the F8 key
- On the menu that appears, choose "safe mode with networking".
- This will bring your computer into safe mode, don't worry if the screen looks a little different, this is normal.
- Run a speed test and note the result.
- To exit safe mode, simply restart the PC normally. Once restarted in normal mode, run another speed test and compare it to the safe mode test. If there's a significant difference, you likely have a program which is using your broadband, and needs to be reconfigured or disabled to get the best speed out of your connection.
Examples of these are torrent/peer to peer clients, update services for games/applications or even viruses.
Step four: Make sure you are using the correct username and password combination for your broadband service
The username and password that should be stored in your router are:
