We had a great time coveraging all the events of the Mobile World Congress 2016. This year seen a record attendance of over 110,000 visitors and none were left disappointed. Heres a recap of what went down in Barcelona:


Mobile is Disruption

Although this may sound like Mobile being an annoyance, this discussion was centred around how mobile impacts everyday life in a positive light. For instance, we heard about how a device can now be used for Snowboarding to track all types of metrics such as speed and how much G-force the rider experiencing during a run. Snowboarders can then share this information with their friends in a great way to track performance.


We learnt that Mobile is now an intergral part of how the Red Bull F1 racing team work with regard to pitstops where race engineers use mobile technology to track how many more laps the tyres on their formula 1 car can lost before a pitstop is necessary and how real time data is helping them optimise performance.


5G was discussed in length and how it may be used. Expected to be rolled out sometime between 2018 and 2020, 5G will be accessible to industrial and commercial use. Healthcare and package deliveries were mentioned as big areas 5G can be advantageous to. 

Mobile Is Connected Living


We heard from Ford Motor Company CEO Mark Fields on how Ford want to reshape the future of transportation. Moving from an auto industry to an auto mobility industry. 


Paypal president Dan Schulman talked about the democratisation of money and the digitsation of commerce. Essentially his big message was that people are buying online more than ever and 2015 was the first year were online sales outperformaned traditional sales on Black Friday & Cyber Monday. We learnt that Paypal over 14 million digital stores and they have over 180 million subscribers with the average subsriber using the service over twice a month.
Huawei CEO, Guo Ping, spoke about how mobile is enhancing the IOT and bringing everything together, and how going forward mobile will integrate how you interact with your car and your home.




Mobile Is Everything

The theme of the Mobile World Congress 2016 is Mobile Is Everything. We heard an overview of what we can expect from the week.



Mark Zuckerberg



After a shaky start with some technical difficulties Mark Zuckerberg hit his stride at MWC 2016 covering topics such as

Mobile Is Securing The Digital ID


Simon Segars, CEO of ARM Holdings, opened the day off discussing how, as we become more and more connected, how we need to be more mindful of cyber crime. He discussed the processes which are, and which must be, put in place for the IOT to really take off. Certain example of where we must be vigilant of cyber crimes were given. We heard of how a simple Teddy bear with an integrated camera, traditionally used to keep an eye on the little ones, could be hacked by an outside party. There is also the added risk that, as homes becomes "smart homes" and we connect more in a digital way with our residences, this could put us at risk. 

Mobile Is Media

The first part of a double header, this centred around how mobile has become so heavily important, and influential, in media. Co-founder of popular publication The Huffington Post, and also current CEO of Buzzfeed, Jonah Peretti spoke about his initial weariness of mobile in what was once a desktop world. He mused about how that initial weariness dissapted as the results of how far mobile can spread media became apparent.

Next up during this keynote was the CEO and founder of the worlds largest e-sports company, ESL. Ralf Reichert, once just a gaming enthusiast, spoke of how its a question of WHEN and not IF virtual sports and competitive gaming makes it to an Olympic level of competition. An example of just how big this field could become was illustrated by the fact that Twitch, a network where gaming fans can watch master gamers at work, was sold to Amazon for $1billion dollars.


Mobile Is Media

The second installment of what really encapsulates the essence of what the Mobile World Congress is all about was kicked off by the CEO of BT Group Gavin Patterson. Patterson spoke of how the company are now using data and media in the correct way, which is mobile first. A particularly poignant line from his interview was where he stated that your mobile phone is now "mission control".... "a gateway to everything".

Laura Desmond, CEO of Starcom, outlined the importance of push notifications and how integral it is to businesses to draw users back to their content on their mobile phone.


To round off the day Jonathan Skogmo, one of the founders of Jukin Media, told the masses that 60% of all media content is now viewed through mobile.... this is up a massive 50% on last year. Some crazy statistics he threw out where that there is 500,000 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute! He also expressed the importance of user generated content, but also how this can cause problems in the realm of privacy.


Mobile Is Transforming Industries

Bill Ruh, CEO of GE industries, claimed that Mobile is the biggest opportunity in three decades for Industry and how 3% of change in production through mobile methods, such as; real time data, sensor technology and optimised performance could be worth a trillion dollars.

Chief Executive Officer of Royal Caribbean Cruises Richard Fain told us how mobile technology has transformed how his companies ships are built. Not only has it transformed the building process of the ships but also how Royal Carribean look after the crew and customers. A great example of this is how they have managed to reduce average boarding time from 115 minutes to 10 minutes!


Mastercard president Ann Cairns spoke of how banks, governments and telecommunication companies are working together to create solutions that works for all three sectors. How mobile has helped the financial services giant in the evolution of digital payments, ATM, Contactless Payments and Online Ordering.




Mobile Is Commerce


One of our very own, Patrick Collison of Limerick, took to the stage to speak under the banner of "Mobile Is Commerce". The graduate of Castletroy College told us how Stripe, the company he co-founded and runs, is present in 24 countries and that 27% of americans purchased online through a vendor using stripe technology.




We learned how Internet Economy is growing at a rate of 5% higher than GDP globally. He also unveiled a new product called Atlas, which will aid global entrepreneurship by allowing people all over the world to operate in the US without having to have a presence in the US.
