After a successful day 1 of the Mobile World Congress 2016, the hoards of people who have visited Barcelona to view the latest and greatest of Mobile technology returned, eagerly anticipating what day 2 would have in store.
The day consisted of varying topics such as:
Mobile Is Securing The Digital ID
Simon Segars, CEO of ARM Holdings, opened the day off discussing how, as we become more and more connected, how we need to be more mindful of cyber crime. He discussed the processes which are, and which must be, put in place for the IOT to really take off. Certain example of where we must be vigilant of cyber crimes were given. We heard of how a simple Teddy bear with an integrated camera, traditionally used to keep an eye on the little ones, could be hacked by an outside party. There is also the added risk that, as homes becomes "smart homes" and we connect more in a digital way with our residences, this could put us at risk.
Mobile Is Media
The first part of a double header, this centred around how mobile has become so heavily important, and influential, in media. Co-founder of popular publication The Huffington Post, and also current CEO of Buzzfeed, Jonah Peretti spoke about his initial weariness of mobile in what was once a desktop world. He mused about how that initial weariness dissapted as the results of how far mobile can spread media became apparent.
Next up during this keynote was the CEO and founder of the worlds largest e-sports company, ESL. Ralf Reichert, once just a gaming enthusiast, spoke of how its a question of WHEN and not IF virtual sports and competitive gaming makes it to an Olympic level of competition. An example of just how big this field could become was illustrated by the fact that Twitch, a network where gaming fans can watch master gamers at work, was sold to Amazon for $1billion dollars.
Mobile Is Media
The second installment of what really encapsulates the essence of what the Mobile World Congress is all about was kicked off by the CEO of BT Group Gavin Patterson. Patterson spoke of how the company are now using data and media in the correct way, which is mobile first. A particularly poignant line from his interview was where he stated that your mobile phone is now "mission control".... "a gateway to everything".
Laura Desmond, CEO of Starcom, outlined the importance of push notifications and how integral it is to businesses to draw users back to their content on their mobile phone.
To round off the day Jonathan Skogmo, one of the founders of Jukin Media, told the masses that 60% of all media content is now viewed through mobile.... this is up a massive 50% on last year. Some crazy statistics he threw out where that there is 500,000 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute! He also expressed the importance of user generated content, but also how this can cause problems in the realm of privacy.
