I have a Vodafone R216 mobile wifi-device on monthly contract. It no longer allows me connect to the internet and I have an SMS message on the device saying "Please ensure that your SIM is a Vodafone prepaid SIM". Has something changed with my account? I've followed the troubleshooting suggestions for the R216 but they have not helped.

I don't know exactly how old the SIM is. I can't remember when I bought the modem. Its at least 2 years old, maybe 4 years. Its the SIM that came with the R216. Its not a pay-as-you-go SIM so I don't topup.

So have you been paying the bills all this time but not using it?
I think you just need to get a new sim. If the sim is very old it may have failed. You can get a replacement sim from a store for free.

Wouldn't hurt to remove the sim and put it back in just to see if that helps.
Also, if you have a Vodafone handset, you could pop it in there real quick to see if it boots up as it should or if you are greeted with the same message.
Would help determine if its the equipment or sim.
Also, perhaps a member of the Vodafone team here can check the backend to ensure everything is showing ok on their end.

I've been in contact with Vodafone support and turns out the problem is straightforward: I've used up my monthly data allowance. Pity there isn't a message that tells you that. The allowance resets in a day or so.

I thought that answer might be too obvious but clearly it wasn't. Glad it's sorted.
Amazing how we sometimes overlook the obvious like that.
Also glad to hear its all sorted
