Wifi speed network settings

I have a Vodafone smart 7 Ultra with a wifi connection at home which runs at 240 mb. The phone connects to wifi and runs at the great speed of 50mb... for a few hours, and then drops off to 0.8 mb download and 24mb upload. (strange!) I can solve the problem by resetting network settings, but a couple of hours later the speed is back down to 0.8 mb. The wifi from the ISP remains constant as measured on PC and android box.

Can anyone help...

thanks

Re: Wifi speed network settings

Many factors affect WiFi speeds. How many other devices connect to WiFi? What types are they?

Re: Wifi speed network settings

Try leave the router in a location with no interference eg: TV, Radio or a wireless phone base station. Have you changed the channel settings on the router?

The day of idiots is upon us!!!!

Re: Wifi speed network settings

Hi there,

The guys here have asked some good questions, can you manually change the channel settings on your router and advise on the outcome?

Thanks,

Ashling

Thanks guys. Other devices are 2 laptops and one android box. The router is a Virgin broadband and home phone, 240 Mbps. I don't have access to change channels etc, but according to their tech spec the box chooses the best channel on reboot... so I've rebooted it regularly.

When the phone slows down I test the WiFi speed on both the PC's and the Android box. They are still getting speeds in 50 and 60 Mbps range... so it seems to me that the problem is with the phone?

Resetting network setting solves the problem, but only temporarily, and I've lost all saved networks.
Thanks
Hugh.

Is it perhaps possible to access the detail of what network settings are changing during reset?
Cheers,
Hugh.

Hi Ashling, Still having same problem. When it occurs I switch off all other devices and reboot the Virgin box. This has no effect on the WiFi speed on the phone. Rebooting the phone does not help. All the other devices run at 50/60 Mbps and the phone at ~1.5.

Only resetting network settings helps.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Hugh.

Re: Wifi speed network settings

Hi there,
This sounds like it's very probably interference on the WiFi channel the router is using - we'd recommend contacting the provider and asking how this can be manually changed.

Thanks,

Hi Daz. Thanks for that. I'll look into it.

In the meantime I've done a factory reset.

Will record new results.

I still believe the VDF 700 is the best budget mobile out there!

Thanks,

Hugh.

Hi Daz... I've done that and was very interesting but no change on any channel.

However, I have discovered that the problem is caused only when my Bluetooth is on. So WiFi runs 40/50 Mbps with BT off and drops to 0.5/1.0 when Bluetooth is switched on. It immediately returns to high speed when Bluetooth is switched off again.

I've tested in several different locations with different routers and ISPs with same result every time.

So it is simple for me to just switch BT off in the meantime rather than resetting.

Would you consider this a fault in the VFD700? Should I go in to the shop?

Thanks again,
Hugh.

Re: Wifi speed network settings

As Bluetooth uses the same frequency as Wi-Fi, this can cause interference with your Wi-Fi connection. Unfortunately, this would not be classed as a fault with your hardware.

Thanks,

Ashling

Re: Wifi speed network settings

Can you change to a 5ghz frequency (or dual 2.4 and 5ghz frequencies) on your modem? I'm not sure if the ultra 7 supports that or not but it shoudl fix your issue.

Hi Cookie20 - That's a big improvement. My WiFi runs at 100 Mbps on the 5ghz (twice as fast) and drops to 4 Mbps with BT on.
Thanks,
Hugh.

Re: Wifi speed network settings

Excellent, delighted you got it sorted. Did you get dual frequencies of just the 5? If it's just the 5 then sometimes other devices may loose connection but in general while 5ghz is far better for spead it doesn't have as good a penetration as 2.4.

My router (Virgin media UPC box) can be set to one or other, 2.4 or 5, but not both and I can switch between the two. As you anticipated my laptop and Android box are single band... so their gonna get updated or replaced!

On the penetration/spread issue... I'm in an apartment so near the router at all times: good for 5 GHz.
Thanks
Hugh
